Cleveland Josephus Eaton II (born August 31, 1939 in Fairfield , Alabama ; † July 5, 2020 ) was an American jazz and funk musician ( double bass , also electric bass , piano , saxophone , trumpet , tuba , arrangement , composition ) .

Live and act

Eaton grew up in a suburb of Birmingham (Alabama) and played in the early 1960s in the band of Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams (Hip Entertainment Vol. 1) , in 1963 in Chicago with Bobby Gordon (Warm and Sentimental) . In the 1960s he was a member of the Ramsey Lewis Trio, he also worked a. a. with Bunky Green , Sonny Cox , Herb Lance , Kenny Burrell , in the following decade with Gene Ammons / Dexter Gordon (1970), Sonny Stitt (1973). He also played several from the 70s under his own name (Cleve Eaton and Co.) , e.g. Some funk-oriented singles and LPs for Ovation and Black Jazz Records , including the album Strolling with the Count with musicians from the Basie band. In the early 1980s he was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra . In the field of jazz he was involved in 84 recording sessions between 1961 and 1995. In his later years he performed locally in Birmingham. He had been married since 1976 and had 8 children.
