The rural community of Borgarfjörður ( isl .: Borgarfjarðarhreppur ) is located in eastern Iceland in the Austurland region on the Borgarfjörður eystri fjord .

On January 1, 2019, the community had 109 inhabitants. The main town Bakkagerði (as the fjord is also called Borgarfjörður eystri ) had 77 inhabitants.

history

In 1972 the rural community Loðmundarfjörður ( Loðmundarfjarðarhreppur ) was incorporated.

On October 26, 2019, a vote on the merger with 3 other municipalities took place. The new church will be called Múlaþing .

Geography and traffic

Bakkagerdi harbor

The municipality of Fljótsdalshérað joins in the west, and the municipality of Seyðisfjörður in the south .

In the municipality of Borgarfjörður are the Dyrfjöll and the mountain Hvítserkur . The area is the second largest rhyolite area in Iceland.

The main town of the municipality, Bakkagerði , has a port. A road to the south leads to the abandoned town of Húsavík and Loðmundarfjörður .
