Boris Abramowitsch Rosenfeld

Boris Abramovič Rosenfeld , or Rozenfeld, ( Russian Борис Абрамович Розенфельд , scientific transliteration Boris Abramovič Rozenfel'd ; born August 30, 1917 in Petrograd ; † April 5, 2008 ) was a Russian mathematician (geometry, Lie groups) and mathematician historian.

Rosenfeld studied at Lomonossow University (graduated in 1939). In 1942 he received his doctorate , in 1947 he completed his habilitation (all at Lomonossow University). In 1950 he became a professor in Baku . From 1955 he worked again at various universities in Moscow, since 1964 at the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Most recently he taught at State College in Pennsylvania .

Rosenfeld mastered Arabic and other oriental languages ​​and was known as an expert in mathematics in the Middle Ages. He edited the manuscripts of various Arabic and Oriental scholars, such as Al-Chwarizmi and Al-Kaschi ( Key to Arithmetic , 1956). He also dealt with the history of non-Euclidean geometry and with the geometry of Jordan algebras and Lie groups . He worked with Galina Pavlovna Matvyevskaya .

Rosenfeld supervised over 70 doctoral students.

He was a corresponding member of the International Academy of Science History (since 1971) and the Academy of Sciences of Barcelona .
