Boris Wassiljewitsch Snetkow ( Russian Борис Васильевич Снетков ; born February 27, 1925 in Saratov ; † September 18, 2006 in Moscow ) was a Soviet Army General and from 1987 to 1990 commander in chief of the Group of Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD).

Life

Second World War

Snetkow was drafted into the Red Army in 1942. In October 1943 he completed a crash course at the 2nd Kiev Military School for Armored Artillery and in November 1943 was commanded to the front as the commander of a self-propelled gun ( SU-152 ) . He worked as adjutant to the regimental commander, chief of reconnaissance and assistant to the chief of staff for reconnaissance of the 9th Panzer Regiment. Snetkov fought in the 1st Ukrainian Front , the 3rd Belarusian Front and the 1st Far Eastern Front . He experienced the end of the Second World War as a captain . In 1945 he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

post war period

Snetkow completed various training courses at the military academy for armored forces "JW Stalin" from 1950 to 1953. From 1966 to 1968, as well as 1975 and 1981, he attended the military academy of the General Staff of the Red Army . In 1972, he became a major general in 1974, lieutenant general , 1979 Colonel General and finally on May 7, 1986 Army General transported. In his officer career he passed through various service levels in the following functions:

  • Assistant to the Chief of Staff for operational work from 1946 to 1950
  • Regimental chief of staff , chief of the operational department of the divisional headquarters , commander of the tank regiment from 1953 to 1965

  • Armored division commander of the Kiev military district from 1968 to May 1971
  • Chief of Staff and 1st Deputy Commander of the 3rd Army from May 1971 to August 1973
  • Commander of the 1st Guards Tank Army from August 1973 to July 1975 in the portfolio of GSSD (the staff of the army was in Dresden dislocated )
  • 1st deputy of the GSSD from July 1975 to January 1979
  • Commander of the Siberian Military District from January 1979 to October 1981
  • Commander of the Leningrad Military District from January 1981 to November 1987
  • Commander-in-chief of the GSSD (from June 1989 of the western group of troops ) from November 1987 to December 19, 1990
  • Member of the Inspector General Group of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR from December 1990 to May 1992

Snetkov was one of the few Soviet military leaders who spoke out against the rapid withdrawal of Soviet troops from Germany. He refused to carry out this order.

He left Germany on December 19, 1990 and retired in 1992.

In addition, Snetkow was a member of the Supreme Soviet from 1979 to 1989, a candidate for the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1986 to 1990 and a member of the People's Deputies Congress from 1989 to 1991. He lived in Moscow until his death and was then buried in the Trojekurowo cemetery.
