Bornheimer asparagus is a vegetable asparagus from the Bornheim growing area , which was granted protection of origin under the title Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) by the European Union in 2014 .

EU procedure

The Bornheimer Asparagus Growers Association, founded in 2005, submitted the application for protection on March 17, 2010, which, after being examined by the Commission, was granted on October 2, 2013 through publication in the Official Journal. After no objection was filed, the information was entered on March 14, 2014.

Growing area

The cultivation area is strictly delimited and extends from the Schlosspark Brühl along Landesstraße 183 at the foot of the foothills to Bonn and includes the districts of Graurheindorf , Buschdorf , Tannenbusch , Dransdorf and Lessenich / Meßdorf . The eastern border forms the Rodenkirchener Straße, the area of ​​the Wesselinger Rheinland refinery and the Urfelder Aue.

Climate and soil

The promontory and the adjoining parts of the Cologne-Bonn arable plain on the middle and low terrace of the Ice Age Rhine in the southern tip of the Cologne Bay are in a particularly favorable climatic area. The prevailing westerly winds create a slight foehn effect in the lee of the Eifel and the foothills . Precipitation is therefore sufficient, but not excessive. Turbulence has deposited loess over the centuries, especially in the cold periods with little vegetation , which in connection with the sandy soils generates both good drying and therefore early warming as well as good fertility.

Vegetable growing tradition

Although the Romans probably already brought asparagus to the Rhineland (→ Roman Villa in Botzdorf , Bornheim), first evidence from the 16th century showed that it was not grown again until the Middle Ages (→ Medieval climate optimum ). The nuns of the Annenkloster in Gielsdorf already had an asparagus garden before 1719, with which they also supplied the Alfter rule. In the feudal era there were enough mansions in the area that could be bought (→ castles in the Cologne district ). The proximity to the cities of Cologne and Bonn provided an incentive for intensive vegetable cultivation (→ Thünensche Rings ). The fruit and vegetable auction in the Bornheim district of Roisdorf , which is important for the region , was founded in 1920.

Special features in marketing

The Bornheim asparagus is not pricked as deeply and is therefore less woody at the bottom. It is immediately cooled by ice water, in which it can remain for a maximum of six hours. When sorting and marketing, the specified quality standards must be adhered to, for example the length of the stick for white asparagus and green asparagus must not exceed 22 cm and it must not be less than 16 cm.

Every year since 2011, the cooperative has chosen an asparagus queen together with Brühl and has organized an asparagus festival in Bornheim for years.
