history

The place has been documented as a knight's seat since the 12th century. Around 1500 in the possession of those at Grünroda, they had a simple mansion built in the style of the Renaissance . The castle was surrounded by a moat. Around 1580 the Bornitz estate and castle came to the von Schönberg family , who at that time had the south wing of the castle built. At the end of the 17th century, the castle was rebuilt and expanded in the Baroque style. In 1750 a pleasure garden with floriculture was added.

In the 18th century, the rulership of the Bornitz manor included : Kleinragewitz , Zaußwitz , Schönnewitz , Lonnewitz , Wadewitz and parts of Pochra and Rügeln . In November 1838 the Leipzig-Dresden Railway was completed as far as Bornitz. In the following decades, the railway became the second most important source of income for the Bornitzers alongside agriculture.

After the land of the manor was divided up in the course of the land reform in 1945 , the castle was demolished in 1947/48.

On July 1, 1950, the village became a district of Borna .

On February 25, 1956, the Bornitz railroad accident resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, in which, as a result of several violations of service regulations, a shunting freight train hit the flank of a passing express train.

Bornitz and Borna have belonged to the Liebschützberg community since January 1st, 1997.
