Boric acid triethyl ester ( triethyl borate ) is a chemical compound from the group of boric acid esters . It is the ethyl ester of boric acid .

presentation

Triethyl borate is formed by esterifying boric acid with ethanol in the presence of acidic catalysts :

Alternatively, the compound can be obtained by reacting boron trichloride with ethanol:

When the resulting solution ignites, the flame turns pale yellow, since the yield of the equilibrium reaction is low. The addition of sulfuric acid catalyzes the formation of esters, which causes the flame to turn green when the solution treated with it burns.

properties

Triethyl borate is a highly flammable, volatile, colorless liquid with a weak ethanolic odor. It decomposes in water and when burned, a green flame is created - similar to trimethyl borate . Triethyl borate has a kinematic viscosity of 0.503 mm 2 / s.

use

Triethyl borate is used as a solvent and catalyst in the manufacture of paints and other chemical compounds (e.g. sodium borohydride ). It is also used as a starting product for the manufacture of flame retardants.

safety instructions

The vapors of triethyl borate can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 11 ° C).
