The green twin towers of a high-rise complex in Milan are called Bosco Verticale ( vertical or vertical forest ) . The high-rise towers were planned by the Italian architect Stefano Boeri and his partners from the architectural office Boeri Studio, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra ; The client was Manfredi Catella. The two residential buildings were constructed from 2008 to 2013 and completed in October 2014, they are 110 and 80  m high.

The towers were erected in the Porta Nuova district to the north of central Milan. Next to it is Milan's second largest train station, Milano Porta Garibaldi . Previously there was a workers' residential area here. The center of the new development was left as a green area and local recreation area. The high-rise project consists of the two towers Torre E with a height of 110 m and 27 floors and Torre D with a height of 80 m and 19 floors.

The planning was influenced by the consideration of using urban space as effectively as possible, not sprawling it further, and at the same time improving biodiversity in the city of Milan. With the planting of the towers, new habitats and food spaces were created for insects and birds; in this way, the residential towers can function as stepping stone biotopes between the public parks , the avenues and urban wasteland. The towers are intended to make a contribution to a city's biotope network . The trees and plants on the facade are intended to improve the microclimate in the apartments and on the balconies; the plants are supposed to mitigate noise, dust and heat. This improves the quality of life of the residents and creates a connection to nature in an urban environment.

With this concept, Stefano Boeri won the International High- Rise Award, endowed with 50,000 euros, in 2014 . Boeri's idea of living with trees was inspired by Italo Calvino's novel Il barone rampante (1957) (Eng. The Baron on the Trees ).

Ecological aspects

Detailed view of the terraces and balconies

Around 900 trees, each between 3 and 9 m high when they were planted , as well as more than 2000 other plants were planted on the terraces and balconies on the facades of the buildings. The plantings were made in 1.3 m deep concrete tubs. So that the trees can withstand wind and storms, grids are attached to the bottom of the plant tubs, on which the plant roots find additional support. If the trees of one of the high-rise buildings had been planted on one level, this would have resulted in a planted forest area of 7000 m²; In addition, the built-up living space corresponds to an area of almost 7.5 hectares built with single-family houses  .

The botanist Laura Gatti selected a total of 20 different deciduous and conifer species and 80 additional plant species for the vegetation on the facade. Together with a working group of botanists at the University of Milan , she arranged the trees, shrubs and flowering plants like three-dimensional pictures. When arranging the arrangement, it was important to them that the plants always set new colored accents over the course of the seasons . The planning for the arrangement of the plants took more than two years. The trees and plants were specially grown for the particularities of the growth conditions on a facade, especially with only a small plant bed. The houses and trees were tested for their reactions in a wind tunnel, initially as a pure model, then with real plants.

The planting of the facade with the help of cranes took almost a year. The plants do not belong to the private property of the individual residents, but form community property. There is a management system for the care of the plants. A crane was installed on the roof for maintenance work on the plantations, from which three employed gardeners abseil themselves. They take care of the maintenance from the outside and prune the plants four times a year. The irrigation is carried out by a hose system that transports water from a basin in the basement, in which the domestic water from the houses is collected, to the terraces.

Succession

Another Bosco Verticale by Stefano Boeri is to be built in Lausanne . The high-rise will be built according to the model in Milan and will be used as a residential and commercial building. The skyscraper is to be called Tour des Cèdres (German tower of the cedars) and should originally be built from 2017. However, due to a dispute between the contractors involved, it is unclear whether and when construction will begin.
