Boeri is the son of the Italian furniture designer Cini Boeri and the neurologist Renato Boeri. He studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. He received his doctorate in 1989 at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) . In 2000, Boeri founded the Multiplicity research network for the multidisciplinary investigation of urban settlement structures. The group produced the work Solid Sea , shown at Documenta11 , which gave Boeri the reputation of a political artist in the art world critical of globalization. This reputation did not prevent Boeri from working as an architect for the G8 summit planned by Silvio Berlusconi on La Maddalena . In January 2004, he succeeded Deyan Sudjic as editor-in-chief of the Italian architecture magazine domus and changed the character of the magazine significantly until 2007.

Boeri now lives and works in Milan. In addition to his work as an architect, he writes articles for the daily business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore . Boeri is the founder of the well-known architecture firm Stefano Boeri Architetti and teaches as a professor at the universities in Milan ( Milan Polytechnic ), Genoa and Venice .

Bosco Verticale

The two green high-rise buildings Bosco Verticale in Milan

The construction work on the Bosco Verticale (German: "vertical forest") project was completed in November 2014. The name refers to two green skyscrapers in Milan. Thousands of bushes, hedges and trees were planted on the outer sides of the two 87 m (19 floors) and 119 m (27 floors) high residential buildings, which correspond to the area of one hectare. In 2014 the Bosco Verticale was awarded the International High- Rise Award. In doing so, Boeri is following trends in ecological building , such as those implemented in the “One Central Park” high-rise building in Sydney by Jean Nouvel in collaboration with Patrick Blanc . He was inspired by Italo Calvino's novel Il Barone rampante (1957) (Eng. The Baron on the Trees ).

Eco-projects in China

His architectural office has received several orders in the People's Republic of China. For the Chinese city of Shijiazhuang Boeri was entrusted with the task of finding a new district called Forest City ( Forest City ) plan with planted houses. From 2020, 100,000 people are expected to live in an area of 2.25 km². In addition to saving agricultural land, it is hoped that this will help improve the air and reduce energy costs. In the Wanfeng Valley near Guizhou he is building a cone-shaped hotel. Current construction work is currently the greening of Shanghai Pudong International Airport and two high-rise buildings in the city of Nanjing . Under the direction of Boeri, a new residential district for 30,000 residents has been built in the Chinese city of Liuzhou since 2017, in which all buildings are covered with plants. On an area of 40 hectares, 40,000 trees and around a million plants of more than 100 species will be planted, which will absorb 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually and filter 57 tons of soot and fine dust from the air. In 2020 the residents will move in. A whole row of streets along the Liujiang River is to be built with green houses.
