The Botanical Garden in Bremen am Osterdeich in 1906

The first botanical garden in Bremen was a garden complex on Osterdeich in the Hastedt district that existed from 1905 to 1935 . In 1937 the botanical garden was relocated to the Horn-Lehe district and since then has been part of the Rhododendron Park that was newly founded there.

history

In 1904, the Bremen entrepreneur and patron Franz Schütte made a 4.2  hectare plot of land near the Weser available for 25 years in order to have a botanical garden planted here. The area between the streets Osterdeich , Auf der Hohwisch (today part of Hamburger Straße ) and Hastedter Ring (today Georg-Bitter-Straße ) was directly adjacent to the excursion restaurant Weserlust . To maintain the garden he donated a capital of one million marks, invested in interest bearing securities .

The plan for the garden was designed by Bürgerpark director Carl Ohrt, and the planting was done by the botanist Georg Bitter and the Swiss gardener Ernst Nussbaumer. The garden was structured geographically and included, among other things, areas related to native flora and north German landscapes such as moor and heather or dunes and mud flats, but also exotic plants from the Orient , Mexico , the Caucasus or the tundra . In addition, he had areas on overarching botanical topics such as useful , medicinal and poisonous plants .

According to Franz Schütte, the botanical garden should serve both recreation and education. On the occasion of the opening in 1905, he wrote to Mayor Alfred Dominicus Pauli :

"I hope that the botanical garden will give my fellow citizens a place to relax and, in particular, an important teaching and educational tool for the next generation."

The quality of the botanical garden gained national recognition in the following years and was known, among other things, for the richest shrub population on the continent . After the First World War , however, the garden ran into financial difficulties when inflation drained the foundation's capital. In 1923 the city took over the operating costs of the plant. Since the contract with the Schüttescher Erben for the use of the site expired in 1937, it was decided in 1936 to relocate the facility to the immediate vicinity of the Rhododendron Park in Horn-Lehe . The garden, laid out according to plans by Horticultural Director Richard Homann , is still there today.
