Bitter - son of a Bremen grain broker - studied botany in Jena, Leipzig and Munich after graduating from high school . Bitter received his doctorate in Kiel in 1896. He then worked in Berlin, Naples and Münster. From 1904 on, he and the Swiss gardener Ernst Nussbaumer laid out the botanical garden on Osterdeich , donated by Franz Ernst Schütte . This facility existed until 1935 in the area of ​​today's Georg-Bitter-Strasse . In 1937 the garden was relocated next to the Rhododendron Park .

In 1913, Bitter received the title of professor from the Bremen Senate .

After the First World War , Bitter was appointed professor of botany at the University of Göttingen . For the work The Natural Plant Families by Adolf Engler and Carl Prantl , he edited “Marattiaceae, Ophioglossaceae” for volume I. 4 (1900). Furthermore, together with Bruno Schütt, he published the 8th edition of the work Flora von Bremen and Oldenburg by FGP Buchenau.

Honors

Georg-Bitter-Strasse in Bremen- Hastedt has been named after him since 1928 . In 1913, Carl Julius Bernhard Börner named after him the plant genus Bitteria from the sour grass family (Cyperaceae).
