Bronner grape and leaf

Bronner is a fungus- resistant white wine variety bred in 1975 . The Bronner been on the State Weinbauinstitut Freiburg by Norbert Becker from the varieties Merzling (as parent variety, ♀), and Gm 6494 (as father population, ♂) crossed . Despite the influence of the Vitis amurensis grape variety over the Gm 6494 variety, Bronner does not belong to the hybrid grape family .

The variety is a cross of the varieties: Merzling × ( Zarya Severa × St. Laurent = Gm 6494)

Norbert Becker used the parent varieties Merzling as mother and Gm 6494 as father to cross this variety. Gm 6494 (or Geisenheim 6494) was a seedling population that was crossed in 1964 by Professor V. Kraus in what was then Czechoslovakia from the grape varieties Zarya Severa × St. Laurent . Prof. Kraus offered the seedlings to Prof. Dr. Helmut Becker (1927–1990), who worked at the Geisenheim research institute at the time, recognized the importance of this material and further processed it in breeding in progeny tests. The seedling Gm 6494-5 was selected from the seedling population Gm 6494 due to its special performance and was later propagated and put into practice under the variety name Rondo as an independent grape variety.

Norbert Becker erroneously researched Saperawi Severni instead of Zarya Severa as the mother variety for the seedling population, which was only given the designation Gm 6494 in Geisenheim, when Prof. V. Kraus was crossed in 1964 . A differentiated follow-up research by N. Becker's successor Volker Jörger together with colleagues from the Geisenheim research institute was able to show the error and the true parenthood has now been clarified in specialist circles since 2003.

Since 1977 the variety Bronner has been registered with variety protection in the German variety list.

The name "Bronner" was given in honor of Johann Philipp Bronner .

There are cultivated areas in Belgium, Germany (3 ha), Italy (6 ha), Austria and Switzerland. In 2010 there was a total of 9 hectares worldwide.

Ampelographic features

  • The leaves are large, five-lobed and dark green with noticeably little leaf hair. Similarities to the Pinot Blanc are recognizable.
  • The grapes are medium to large, dense berries. The berries are medium to large.
  • Budding, flowering and the beginning of ripening take place 1 week later than with Pinot Blanc.

The frost resistance is considered very good. The location requirements correspond to those of the Burgundy varieties, but require a good water supply. A sugar content of at least 18.5 to 19 ° KMW is required for the appropriate wine quality.

Wine

The bouquet is relatively neutral and sometimes reminds of the scent of apples. When fully ripe, the wines have a medium to good structure and are reminiscent of Pinot Blanc . If the ripeness is insufficient, the wine can appear inharmonious with a bitter finish.

Other varieties named Bronner

The “Bronnertraub” variety is a cross between Elbling × Chasselas and must not be confused with the Bronner variety. The Bronnertraub also has the synonyms: Bronner, Bronnerstraube, Bronnerstraube red and Auswendiges Bronnerstraube.
