Braj Kumar Nehru (born September 4, 1909 in Allahabad , † October 31, 2001 in Kasauli , Himachal Pradesh ) was an Indian diplomat and governor of several states.

Life path

Braj Kumar Nehru's father was Brij Lal Nehru , his mother the social reformer Rameshwari Nehru (1886–1966). He studied at Government Intermediate College in Allahabad , the School of Economics in London and Balliol College in Oxford . On October 25, 1934, he joined the Indian Civil Service (ICS). After arriving in India in November, he was first assistant commissioner in Punjab , then sub-divisional officer from April 1937 to 1939.

This was followed by his appointment as Under Secretary in the Department of Education and Health. He held the same position in 1940 in the Treasury, from which he was posted to the Reserve Bank of India for special tasks. In 1944 he was promoted to Deputy Secretary and in 1947 to Joint Secretary. He represented India a. a. at the Reparations Conference 1945 and the Conference of Treasury Ministers of the Commonwealth 1949–50, 1955–56 and 1958. In 1946 he worked on a commission of inquiry into the finances of the Australian Confederation. He was also a delegate to the Bandung conference .

This was followed by his appointment as envoy in Washington (1949-53), at the same time he was a director at the World Bank . From 1951 to 1953 he was a member of the UN budget committee. He also represented India at the UN General Assembly from 1949–52, and at the FAO from 1949–50 . In 1951 he was under discussion as a candidate for the post of UN Secretary General.

1954-57 he was Joint Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Economic Affairs, until 1958 then sole incumbent. In addition, in 1955 he was government advisor for Sudan, which is about to become independent . From 1961 he was ambassador to Washington for seven years.

His cousin Indira Gandhi appointed him governor of Assam and Nagaland in April 1968 , a position he held until September 1973. At the same time, since January 1972 he was governor of the newly created states of Manipur , Meghalaya and Tripura , i.e. for the entire politically troubled northeast of the country.

He subsequently represented India as High Commissioner in London until 1977 . After his return he became governor 1981–83 of Jammu & Kashmir , from April 26, 1984 to February 26, 1986 then of Gujarat .

He died of heart failure in Kasauli and was cremated on November 1, 2001 in the crematorium at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi.
