Braslau or Braslaw ( Belarusian Браслаў Brasłaŭ , Russian Браслав , Polish Brasław ; Lithuanian Breslauja ) is a city with 9900 inhabitants (2009) in the Wizebskaja Woblasz in Belarus and the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name Braslau .

history

The first mention of the city on the north bank of Lake Drivyaty comes from the year 1065. The city in the principality of Polotsk was originally called Brjachislavl and was named after the then Polotsk ruler Brjachislav , a grandson of Vladimir the Great .

Braslau has a castle that is dated to the period 1050–1200. There are also ruins of a 12th century church. Braslau belonged to Poland-Lithuania before it came to Russia in 1795. It became Polish in 1921 and fell to the Soviet Union in 1939 . Germany captured it during World War II in 1941 until the Red Army recaptured it in 1945. It remained Russian until Belarus became independent in 1991, see History of Belarus .
