Brats was a Danish punk , hard rock and heavy metal band from Copenhagen that was formed in 1978 and disbanded in 1980.

history

The band was formed in May 1978 and consisted of the singer Michael Gorm aka Franz De Zaster, the bassist Michael Hillerup aka Mickey Rat, the guitarist Rene Krolmark aka Hank De Wank and the drummer Milan Balsgaard aka Eddie Haircut. It was initially a punk band that can be heard on the 1979 sampler Pære Punk . After that, in February of that year, it almost came to an end. Krolmark reformed the group as a hard rock band. In addition to him, the line-up consisted of bassist Jens “Yenz” Arnsted, guitarist Michael Denner (both former members of the Jezebel group) and drummer Lars “Monroe” Nybo. During a gig in Copenhagen, Franz Beckerlee and producer Niels Erik Lund became aware of the group, whereupon they informed the A&R department of CBS . In 1980 the group signed a contract with the label. After the single B-Brains had been released on a sampler containing well-known foreign bands, the debut album was released a little later in 1980 . In the same year there was also a split release with Tyrantz. However, since the album was selling very poorly and only brought moderate success in France , the contract was terminated. After further line-up changes, including King Diamond as a singer, the band broke up. The reason for the dissolution was a lack of support from CBS. In addition, the label had asked that the band sing their songs in Danish . The members then founded the bands Geisha and Mercyful Fate . Milan Balsgaard died in 1992 after an illness at the age of 33. 2008 appeared on Aarg! Records the compilation The Lost Tapes (Copenhagen 1979) .

style

According to Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic , Brats were initially a pure punk band before they later approached hard rock. In an interview with Matthias Mader from Rock Hard , Arnsted stated that the members were influenced by groups like the Ramones , The Stooges , Kiss and UFO . According to Mader, the group had developed from a "three-chord punk band" to hard rock and heavy metal within a year. The album is a mixture of punk, hard rock and proto- metal . 1980 is described by many experts as Denmark's first heavy metal album.
