The house Breiter Weg 212a is a listed building in Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .
location
It is located on the west side of the Breite Weg in Magdeburg's old town . Immediately to the north is the also listed building Breiter Weg 212 , where the Volksbank Magdeburg is located.
Architecture and history
The four-story residential and commercial building was built in 1905 according to plans by Johann August Duvigneau in the neo-baroque style for the banker FA Neubauer. The facade of the representative building has a central bay in front of the first and second floor , which is crowned by a curved gable . The bay window is supported by two herms. The facade is structured by colossal pilasters with neo-baroque Ionic capitals. There is rich stucco decoration in the window parapets of the bel étage and in the gable of the bay window . The design of the facade was based on the Magdeburg baroque architecture of the 18th century, which was originally formative for the development of the Breite Weg. Between the second and third floors there is a cornice that took up the original eaves height of the baroque houses on the Breite Weg. An originally existing central gable and a mansard roof are no longer preserved.
At least from 1938, the United Life Insurance Company AG for handicrafts and trades from Hamburg owned the house. During the Second World War , the second and third upper floors and the attic burned out. However, it was rebuilt. In 1950, the VASA insurance company of the state of Saxony-Anhalt was named as the owner of the house.
The famous cathedral bookstore Holtermann, founded by Ernst Holtermann , has been on the ground floor of the house since 1905 . During the GDR era there was also an office for the Liberal-Democratic newspaper in the building .
As part of the last closed row of buildings on the Breite Weg, the building is considered significant in terms of urban development.
In the local register of monuments , the residential and commercial building is listed under registration number 094 16644 as a monument .
