Brilliant blue FCF ( E 133) is a blue triphenylmethane dye that is used as a food coloring . It belongs to the application group of acid dyes and is one of the patent blue dyes .
properties
Brillantblau FCF is a reddish-blue powder, water-soluble and stable. As the pH value falls, the dye decomposes, which shortens the π-electron system that provides the color . This changes the color from blue first to green and then to yellow. If the pH value drops even further, brilliant blue is completely discolored. The neutral solution has an absorption maximum at λ max. = 630 nm.
Manufacturing
Brilliant blue FCF is made from 2-sulfobenzaldehyde and 3 - {[ethyl (phenyl) amino] methyl} benzenesulfonic acid:
The disodium salt is commercially available. The calcium, ammonium and potassium salts as well as the aluminum varnish of the dye are also permitted.
use
Brillantblau FCF is used to color drinks, food and medicines, as well as in liquid surfactant products (liquid detergents , fabric softeners ) and in mouthwash , gel toothpaste and perfumes.
In order to achieve green, purple or brown tones, brilliant blue FCF is mixed with other dyes, e.g. B. with tartrazine (E 102) to create green tones.
health
Brilliant blue FCF is considered harmless. The permitted daily dose was set at 6 mg / kg body weight. Most of the dye is excreted unchanged.
Animal experiments have shown that brilliant blue FCF is deposited in the kidneys and lymph vessels when taken in high doses .
Legal situation
Brilliant blue FCF is only approved for certain products. These include:
- edible coatings for cheese and sausage ( qs )
- Sweets (max. 300 mg / kg)
- Cakes, biscuits, pastries (max. 200 mg / kg)
- Spirits, fruit and fruit wines (max. 200 mg / kg)
- Ice cream, desserts (max. 150 mg / kg)
- Sauces, condiments, appetizers (max. 500 mg / kg)
