The Britanniahütte is a mountain hut belonging to the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) in the canton of Valais . It is located above Saas Fee at an altitude of 3030 m not far from the Felskinn mountain station . With up to 9,697 visitors per year, it is one of the SAC's most popular huts. The hut can be chosen as the starting point for the Haute Route .
history
The hut was built in 1912 as a wooden house with 34 beds. The construction costs of 20,000 Swiss francs were financed by the association of British members of the SAC. Hence the name Britanniahütte . In 1929 a stone building with 84 seats was built and in 1951 the hut was expanded. A total renovation took place in 1996/97, whereby emphasis was placed on future operation that was as environmentally friendly as possible.

Infrastructure
Electricity is generated by the hut's own solar system. The roof supplies meltwater and rainwater for a 16,000 liter tank under the hut. The refuse from the hut is separated (glass, PET, etc.) and flown down to the valley by helicopter together with the waste water. The hut has a winter room (12 beds), which is open all year round.
Ascent
The hut trail starts at the mountain station of the Felskinn cable car. In about 1¼ hours you can get to the hut via the Egginerjoch and the Chessjen glacier. Crampons or other climbing equipment are not required. Alternative ascents lead from the mountain inn Plattjen (2 hours 20 minutes) or from Saas Almagell (4 hours) to the hut.
