The 48th season of the British Touring Car Championship began on April 9, 2005 at Donington Park and ended on October 2, 2005 at Brands Hatch . As in 2004, it consisted of ten race weekends with three races each on nine different tracks. After a total of 30 races, Matt Neal ( Honda Integra ) won ahead of Yvan Muller ( Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch ) and Dan Eaves (also Honda Integra). Vauxhall was the winner of the constructors' championship .

Changes to the 2005 season

The tire manufacturer Dunlop became the new title sponsor of the series. The starting line-up for the third race of a race weekend was determined by the target order of the second race, but with the first ten in reverse order. In 2004, this rule was implemented for the second race with the target order of the first race. The cars of the top five in the championship were given championship ballast for the training session, qualifying and the first race. The "negative" ballast for the drivers who did not finish in the first five places has been abolished. The number of tires was limited to 16 new slicks per race weekend, but no limit for rain tires . The number of test days during the season was limited to four for all teams. The Independent Teams Championship was introduced. This was won by the Halfords team with 725 points ahead of the WSR team with 256 points. Team Arena Motorsports came in third with 230 points.
