The Handbook of Mathematics , commonly known mostly as Bronstein called, is a mathematical reference book that on the Russian-language "Handbook of Mathematics Technical for engineers and students Universities" (Справочник по математике для инженеров и учащихся втузов) the Soviet mathematician Ilya Nikolayevich Bronschtein (Bronstein, 1903–1976, Russian Илья Николаевич Бронштейн ) and Konstantin Adolfowitsch Semendjajew (1908–1988, Russian Константин Адольфович Семендяев ).

The main subject is the presentation of mathematics in definitions, examples and numerous tables. The book is characterized by an almost complete listing of all analytically resolvable integrals , i.e. H. antiderivatives that can be represented in closed form .

history

The two authors wrote the work in 1939-40, the Soviet edition of the Справочник по математике для инженеров и учащихся втузов ( Sprawotschnik po matematike dlja inschenerow i utschaschtschichsja wtusow ) then appeared in 1945 (the printing plates were during the siege of Leningrad disappeared, then appeared but again ). The German translation by Viktor Ziegler (1922–1980) first appeared in 1958 by BG Teubner in Leipzig . In the 1970s, the book was completely reworked by mathematicians in the GDR on behalf of Teubner Verlag under the direction of Ziegler and Günter Grosche ( University of Leipzig ) . The new edition appeared in 1979 and has been in several editions since then. A new Russian edition was published at that time (13th edition in 1986). The Soviet publisher Nauka had phased out the Russian editions with the 11th edition in 1967 because it preferred to publish an American manual in translation to meet the increased requirements. Because of its detailed presentation, the "Bronstein" is considered a standard work for higher mathematics . Translations into English and Japanese are available.

In 1979 a supplementary volume appeared, which u. a. concerned with mathematical information processing.

The work was continued by others and is now published by two publishers (BG Teubner and Verlag Europa-Lehrmittel ), with the split between two publishers having its roots in the division of the two German states and in copyright law .

The two-volume edition under the direction of Eberhard Zeidler at Springer (taken over by Teubner) is a completely new edition and goes far beyond the content of the old Bronstein in terms of the sub-areas of mathematics, scope and penetration.

Since the mid-1990s, the Bronstein has been further developed by both publishers independently of each other, which is why the two editions are now very different. Only the edition from the Europa-Lehrmittel publishing house (which it took over from Harri Deutsch in 2013 ) may bear the title Bronstein .

Bronstein integrable

Because of the almost complete listing of all analytically resolvable integrals, universities jokingly refer to terms such as Riemann-integrable or Lebesgue-integrable also of Bronstein-integrable functions, provided that their integral can be found in the pocket book of mathematics .

The determination of the integrals with conventional means of integral calculus is often lengthy, which is why reference is made to the Bronstein in corresponding courses .
