Brooks Benedict (born February 6, 1896 in New York City , New York , † January 1, 1968 in Houston , Texas ) was an American actor .

life and career

Brooks Benedict, born in New York, studied at Princeton University in California . During World War I he was a pilot in the United States Army Air Service for the United States . After the war, Benedict moved to Hollywood, where he initially took on various smaller jobs. In 1923 he made his acting debut with a supporting supporting role in William A. Wellman's adventure film Cupid's Fireman . This was followed by other films such as The Only Woman (1924) alongside Norma Talmadge and The Sports Student (1925) with Harold Lloyd . The latter film, in which Benedict had a major role as a villainous student, became one of Harold Lloyd's greatest hits. He later made other films with Lloyd such as Street Hunting with Speedy (1928) and Harold, the dragon slayer (1929). Even with other comedians like Harry Langdon at Tramp, Tramp, Tramp (1926) and The strong man (The Strong Man) (1926) turned Benedict. These appearances made him a well-known supporting actor of the 1920s.

When the talkies began in the late 1920s, Benedict was usually only offered minor supporting roles. He often played urban characters such as taxi drivers, night club-goers or photographers in smaller roles. In the 1930s he still had a few notable supporting roles in films such as The Office Wife (1930), What Price Hollywood? (1932) and Marine against Lovesickness (1934), before he had to be content with small roles. He played such tiny roles in classics such as The Thin Man (1934), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), A Journey From The Past (1942), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Jack London (1943), Dolly Sisters (1945), Isn't Life Beautiful? (1946), The Hero of the Day (1946), Goldenes Gift (1947) and The Stranger on the Train (1951). In 1958 he played his last role as Barker in Houseboat alongside Sophia Loren and Cary Grant . By then he had acted in at least 320 films. Brooks Benedict died on New Years Day 1968 in Texas at the age of 71.
