Western Australia

The Brookton Highway is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of Western Australia . It connects the Albany Highway in Kelmscott , a southeastern suburb of Perth, with the South Coast Highway at Raventhorpe . The highway is continuously developed as a two-lane road and is called State Road 40 (S40).

course

The highway begins in Kelmscott on the southeastern outskirts of Perth. There it branches off the Albany Highway (S30) to the east-southeast. Through Westdale it leads to Brookton , where it crosses the Great Southern Highway (S120). From there, the Brookton Highway continues east, crosses the Avon River and reaches the city of Corrigin , the largest settlement on this road with around 900 inhabitants.

Via Kondinin and Hyden he continues his way east, then shortly before reaching the salt lake Lake Carmody he turns to the southeast. Along a number of other, small salt lakes, the road leads southeast and reaches the South Coast Highway (R1) at Ravensthorpe.

National nature

At Kelmscott the highway runs through dense Jarrah forest on Darling Scarp , but further east the landscape soon becomes flat and uninteresting. The road runs through farmland, where wheat is mainly grown. Between Hyden and Ravensthorpe the landscape becomes more barren and the fields give way to salt lakes.

Importance and road conditions

The eastern part of the route is sometimes relatively narrow, which is a certain problem for the tourist flows to Wave Rock . The state government is gradually widening the road in this area.

The highway is part of a route that connects Perth with the southern coastal city of Esperance and is therefore of particular importance as a road link for heavy traffic and tourists. Most of the road can be used with trucks up to 36.5 m in length, as they are usually used for the transport of grain and cattle. Holiday travel, especially to Wave Rock near Hyden , is also important in the western part of the route.

Forest fire 2011

The devastating forest fire in Kelmscott and Roleystone , which destroyed 71 houses and damaged 39 others, also left Buckingham Bridge in flames on February 6, 2011. This wooden bridge was built in 1935. A temporary bridge over the Canning River was opened to traffic on March 4, 2011. It is from 400 to. Rock, 250 to. broken limestone and 4,500 to. Filler material was created and is sufficient for passenger and delivery vehicles. Only heavy traffic has to be diverted via Welshpool Road . This part of the highway is used by 4,000 vehicles per day.
