Brown's Town is a small town in northern Jamaica . The city is located in County Middlesex in the Parish Saint Ann . In 2012, Brown's Town had a population of 7,986 people.

etymology

The place was named after the plantation owner Hamilton Brown, known as the eccentric.

history

In the early 19th century, Hamilton Brown, a wealthy entrepreneur, acquired the rights to Huntley and Minard Estate. They operated plantations in Jamaica. The first plantations were established north of what is now Brown's Town, including allspice, sugar and pepper. Hamilton Brown was instrumental in local politics in the 19th century. A settlement emerged that was later called Brown's Town.

Hamilton Brown was the founder of the Colonial Church Union from which the Dr James Johnson's Jamaica Evangelistic Mission was formed, an offshoot of the Baptist Church that is now one of the largest groups of churches on the island.

Brown's Town is located in the Dry Harbor Mountains in the northern part of Parish Saint Ann, at an average altitude of 450 meters above sea level. The main part of the place is between several hills. In the north, a drop of over a hundred meters to 200 meters as the crow flies forms part of the local border.

The next larger town is Dumbarton in the north . Steward Town is about four kilometers to the west . To the east the place borders on the settlements Philadelphia and Sturge Town .

Economy and Infrastructure

Brown's Town is one of the largest and most important cities of St. Ann, mainly because of the high concentration of educational institutions in the region, as well as the nationally known Brown's Town farmer's market .

In town, the B3 that runs from May Pen to Runaway Bay and the B11 that starts near Falmouth and goes to Golden Grove intersect .

Buildings

The New Hope Great House is a preserved mansion from the early 19th century. The preserved property of the Minard Estate with the ruins of the Minard Great House also dates from this time .

nature

In 1914 the previously unknown Ugli fruit was discovered in the vicinity of the city . A hybridization of mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and grapefruit ( Citrus × aurantium ).

Sports

To the north of Brown's Town is Dover Raceway , a circuit that hosts international motorsport events.

Other popular sports in the city include cycling , football , cricket , netball , athletics, and lawn tennis .

Brown's Town is home to Saint Ann's healthcare headquarters. There are two hospitals, St Ann's Bay Regional Hospital and Alexandria Hospital , as well as a medical care center and many private providers of medical services.

schools

Brown's Town is considered the educational capital of St. Ann. There are two universities in the city, the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology . In addition, there are three grammar schools in Brown's Town: Brown's Town High School, St. Hilda Diocesan High School for Girls and York Castle High School.
