Brundidge is a city in Pike County in the state of Alabama in the United States .
geography
Brundidge is located in southeast Alabama in the southern United States, about 39 miles west of the Georgia border .
Nearby places include Banks (6 km north), Troy (7 km northwest), Ariton (11 km southeast), Clio (13 km east) and Louisville (20 km east). The next larger city with 205,000 inhabitants is the capital of Alabama, Montgomery, about 70 kilometers to the northwest .
history
The city was founded before the Civil War by George C. Collier, who established a salon and trading post here. The first name was Collier's Store , but was renamed to its current name in 1854 in honor of James McGinnis Brundidge.
After the war, the city established itself primarily as a center of agriculture. In 1856 a post office and 1889 a depot of the Alabama Midland Railway were built, hotels and shops followed. As a Dothan subdivision, the railway line is now used primarily for freight traffic.
In 1893 the city was incorporated. The Brundidge Banking Company was founded in 1900, followed by the First National Bank in 1904 . At times there were three newspapers in the city: Brundidge News (from 1893), Brundidge Sentinel (from 1926) and Brundidge Banner (from 1962); all of them have ceased operations to this day.
The Johnson Oil Company , founded in the 1920s , which at times produced over 2 million barrels of oil annually, now serves as a museum.

Alabama State Route 53 and US Highway 231 , which connects to US Highway 29 a few kilometers north, run from west to south of the city . Alabama State Route 10 and Alabama State Route 93 intersect downtown .
To the northeast of the city is Brundidge Municipal Airport , but it is closed indefinitely. Troy Municipal Airport is 20 kilometers to the northwest .
economy
The local Walmart distribution center is one of the largest employers in the region with 800 employees.
Demographics
The 2000 census showed a population of 2341, divided between 1014 households and 652 families. The population density was 93 people per square kilometer. 63.5% of the population were black, 33.4% white, 0.5% Indians and 0.3% Asians. 2.3% had two or more races , 0.8% were Hispanics or Latin American of any ethnicity. For every 100 women there were about 82 men. The median age was 42, the per capita income was $ 12,357 and 35.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.
By the 2010 census , the population had dropped to 2076.
