History and population

Brunnern was officially named as Prunnen in the 13th century , the place name being derived from the Bavarian-Middle High German word for source or well prunne '.

In 1869, 23 people lived in four houses in Brunnern. By 1910, the population sank slightly to 43 people, although the village, classified as a hamlet, still consisted of four buildings. At that time only Catholics lived in the community, the gender ratio was almost balanced. In 1923, too, little had changed in terms of the size of the hamlet. This year four buildings with 24 residents were also counted. As a result, the number of inhabitants rose slightly, although the number of buildings always remained the same. In 1951, 26 people lived in four buildings, in 1971 there were 28 residents. In 1981 the population had dropped back to 23, with three of the four buildings comprising at least one apartment and a total of six households. In 2001 there were households in all four buildings, a total of five apartments were counted, in which only 19 people now lived. There were also four agricultural and forestry operations in Brunnern. In 2011 the village only had 18 residents.
