Bruno Branciforte

Bruno Branciforte (born November 6, 1947 in Naples ) is a retired Italian admiral . Branciforte was Chief of the Admiralty's Staff of the Italian Navy from 2010 to 2012 . Before that, he headed the intelligence services SISMI and AISE .

Life

Branciforte was trained at the Accademia Navale from 1965 to 1969 . Until 1976 he served on various warships, u. a. also as a flag lieutenant , and completed courses in the field of telecommunications and ship command. In 1976 he became the commandant of a corvette , then he graduated from the Navy's leadership academy and served as an adjutant to the fleet commander .

From 1979 to 1985 Branciforte worked in the marine intelligence service SIOS-Marina , most recently as head of the operative reconnaissance department. After that he was appointed as Commander deputy commander of the cruiser Vittorio Veneto and then commander of the frigate Aliseo . From 1987 to 1989 he worked again for the naval intelligence service as head of the operational department, after which he worked as a naval attaché in Washington until 1992 .

After returning from the USA , Branciforte initially commanded the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi for a year . He then attended the command academy of the armed forces and then again took over command of the porter Garibaldi . From 1995 to 2000 Branciforte worked on the Admiralty staff in Rome . As head of the intelligence department (A2), he was involved in reforms that led to the creation of the Centro Intelligence Interforze (J2) in 1997 and thus to the abolition of the SIOS services of the armed forces . He then headed the (also reformed) planning department of the Admiral's staff (A3) until 2000. From October 2000 to November 2001 he was in command as rear admiral of the deep sea fleet (COMFORAL), after which he became chief of staff in the fleet command (CINCNAV). Because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the United States , the Italian government sent him to Tampa to join the United States Central Command at the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom as Senior National Representative .

Bruno Branciforte was promoted to Vice Admiral in February 2004 and named Commander in Chief of the Fleet (CINCNAV).

On November 20, 2006, Prime Minister Romano Prodi designated him as the new director of the Italian intelligence service SISMI in consultation with the opposition . He took over the post on December 16, 2006 from his predecessor Nicolò Pollari, a general of the Guardia di Finanza . A law of August 3, 2007 replaced the military intelligence service SISMI by the civilian foreign intelligence service Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Esterna , which Branciforte again took over.

Vice Admiral Bruno Branciforte led the Italian Navy from February 23, 2010 to March 2, 2012 as Chief of the Admiralty's Staff .
