Life

Bruno Hesse was the eldest son of the writer Hermann Hesse and his first wife, the photographer Maria Bernoulli (1868–1963). His two brothers were Heiner Hesse (1909–2003), who later became the administrator of his father's estate, and Martin Hesse (1911–1968). After the parents separated in 1919, the children were distributed. At the age of 15, Bruno was cared for by his father with the family of the painter Cuno Amiet . Heiner stayed with his mother while Martin came to the Ringier family in Kirchdorf as a foster child. Bruno attended the École des beaux-arts in Geneva and the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1929 he exhibited for the first time in Zurich. He preferred small formats and was forced to paint “what could be sold: landscapes, forests, houses, flowers”. He especially loved the water and the clouds or the view of the Jura.

In 1936 Bruno Hesse and Kläri Friedli from Spych married . The couple had two children, Christine (* 1938) and Simon (* 1941). Kläri Friedli (1910–1966) died at the age of 56 from a cerebral haemorrhage.

In 1974 Hesse married his then housekeeper Rosa Berger-Bühlmann. This was followed by a lot of traveling with the family, more and more holidays were spent in Ticino, near his brother Heiner Hesse. After attacks of weakness, Bruno Hesse died in his house in Spych. His daughter Christine Widmer-Hesse is Hermann Hesse's estate administrator.
