Bryan Barnet Molloy (born March 30, 1939 in Broughty Ferry , Scotland , † May 8, 2004 near Indianapolis , Indiana ) was a British chemist. He was one of the developers of Prozac at Eli Lilly .

Molloy studied chemistry at the University of St Andrews with a bachelor's degree in 1960 and a doctorate in 1963. As a post-doctoral student , he went to Columbia University and Stanford University and from 1966 he worked for Eli Lilly. There he began research on a project started by Ray W. Fuller (1935-1996) to find new antidepressants, which was also joined in 1971 by David T. Wong (* 1935). Klaus Schmiegel was also involved . In 1974 they found a substance ( fluoxetine , marketed as Prozac) that selectively prevented the reuptake of serotonin in the brain and thus had fewer side effects than previous antidepressants ( tricyclic antidepressants , MAOIs ). The starting point for the search was antihistamines , as one of the first neuroleptics ( chlorpromazine ) came from this group , which also had an antidepressant effect.

Prozac was launched in 1988 and has become a blockbuster drug and one of the most widely prescribed anti-depressants in the world. The patent expired in 2001.

In 1999 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame .
