The Buachaille Etive Mòr ( Gaelic Buachaille Eite Mòr ) is a mountain range up to 1021 meters high in Scotland . His name means Great Shepherd / Guardian of Etive . It is located in the western highlands south of Fort William at the eastern end of Glen Coe . Two of its peaks are among the 282 Munros .

View over the ridge of the Buachaille to the north

The approximately eight kilometer long mountain range of the Buachaille runs from the eastern end of Glen Coe to the southwest, bounded to the east by Glen Etive . The highest peaks of the massif are from north to south the Stob Dearg with 1021 m, the Stob na Doire with 1011 m, the Stob Coire Altruim with 941 m and the Stob na Bròige with 956 m. The Stob Dearg and the Stob na Bròige are Munros, the other peaks have too low a notch height . To the west, the Lairig Gartain valley separates the massif from the Buachaille Etive Beag , which is slightly lower at 958 m.

Due to its striking northeast face, which rises in a pyramid shape above the valley end of Glen Coe and the Rannoch Moor , the Stob Dearg in particular is a very well-known and much-photographed mountain. The easy accessibility via the A82 from Glasgow to Fort William, which runs north of the mountain range, also contributes to this . The Buachaille Etive Mòr can be climbed via various routes, the shortest one leads through the Coire na Tulaich , a cirque on the north side. A popular tour is also the complete crossing of all peaks. The northeast face has some of the most challenging climbing routes in Scotland.
