features

The Bukhara iris is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 40 centimeters. This geophyte forms tubers, which are often incorrectly called " onions ", as persistence organs. The leaves are up to 20 centimeters long and 1.5 to 3.5 centimeters wide at flowering, sickle-shaped and shiny green.

The two to six flowers are golden yellow to almost white or golden yellow and yellowish white. They are in the upper leaf axils. The hanging leaves are about 4 inches long, they are mottled green to purple on both sides of the ridge and their plate is yellow. The standards are white or yellow, 1.5 to 2 inches long, three-lobed, and horizontal or curved. The style branches are 3.6 inches long. The seeds have an appendage.

The flowering period extends from March to April.

Occurrence

The Bukhara iris occurs in Tajikistan and northeast Afghanistan on stony, grassy hills and field edges at altitudes of 800 to 2500 meters.

use

The Bukhara iris is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders. It has been in culture since 1902 at the latest.
