description

Forests on the slopes of the Erkensruhr

The slopes on the Erkensruhr are covered with natural deciduous forest. Beech forests dominate the east and south-east slopes of the valley . On the lower slope there are oaks - hornbeams - forest fringes, in the small notched valleys you can see alders along narrow streams. The herb layer shows demanding species communities. The oaks are rich in epiphytic lichens . Occasionally slate rocks can be seen that are covered with lichen, moss or ferns . On the western slopes ways is Lycopodium clavatum settled. Existing spruce forests are to be converted into hardwood stocks in the long term .

Natural forest cell "Im Brand" in the NSG forest nature reserve Dedenborn

The natural forest cell "Im Brand" has a 140 year old beech indoor forest on a gently sloping south-east slope with Eifel typical acidic, hornbeam beech forest; typically with hardly developed, species-poor shrub and herb layer. Denser areas of the wood fescue or the white grove can only be found locally . The forest contains old beech trees with caves and dead wood. A wide gravel of blueberry - Heather hems accompanied, crossing the forest.

Forest nature reserve Dedenborn

Here is an almost closed forest area. It also includes the predominantly wooded valley sections of the lower reaches of the Püngelbach and Wüstebach, which flow together in the Erkensruhr area, between the Girvelscheid ridge and the wooded valley section of the Erkenzruhr upper reaches. On the Rubbelsberg there are some rocks that are mostly shaded. The thin fern ( Trichomanes speciosum ) listed in Appendix II of the Habitats Directive was first detected in Germany in 1994. The slate rock banks above the wet Wüstebachtalweg are richly overgrown with rock ferns and mosses. Insect larvae indicate good water quality in Erkensruhr and tributaries. The streams are lined with old alders, hornbeams, red beeches and sycamore maples. Here, too, the oaks that occur are rich in epiphytic lichens. In the closed herb layer, the wire Schmiele usually dominates. A small, disused quarry is covered with birch or alder. Hollow-tooth pioneer corridors and grasslands developed on still-open rubble heaps .

Protection purpose

The aim is to preserve these habitats, flowing waters with underwater vegetation, mountain hay meadows, pebbly debris heaps in the mountains, silicate rocks with their pioneer vegetation, beech forest and alder, ash and softwood alluvial forests.

The habitats are to be protected for many according to the red list of endangered plants, fungi and animals in NRW . The area primarily serves to preserve a near-natural stretch of watercourse as a habitat for threatened plant and animal species and the preservation and development of natural habitats in accordance with Annex I of the Habitats Directive: beaver , great mouse-eared bat , pond bat , fire salamander , woodcock , kingfisher , whinchat , magnificent thin fern.

These types of biotopes can be found in this area: springs, wet and humid grassland, near-natural unobstructed stream sections, rocks on the surface. Rough meadows and pastures as well as riparian forests .
