Buck Kartalian

Buck Kartalian (born August 13, 1922 in Detroit , Michigan , † May 24, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Buck Kartalian moved with his parents to New York City when he was two years old , where his father made a living as a baker on the Lower East Side . During the summer months, Kartalian spent his time at a summer camp in Connecticut , where he already came into contact with amateur actors.

During World War II , Kartalian served on a United States Navy destroyer in the Pacific . After returning home, Kartalian began to play sports in a New York gym, became a weightlifter , bodybuilder and wrestler and took part in regional as well as national competitions. Impressed by his physique and presence, Broadway producers also noticed him, so that he got the role of Samson in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet . He never took acting classes.

1953 Kartalian was also his debut as a film actor in the television series Robert Montgomery Presents . Although he has appeared in dozens of feature films and series, he is best known for his role as Gorilla Julius in Planet of the Apes from 1968. In 1972 he took on the role of a male gorilla in the third sequel to the science fiction genre, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes .

Kartalian was in front of the camera until 2006. His most recent productions include the action film The Rock , produced in 1996, or the comedy The Onkel vom Mars, which was staged three years later in 1999 .

Buck Kartalian was married and had three children. His son Jason Kartalian now works as a film producer.

He died in May 2016 at the age of 93.
