The Buckenbowra River is a river in the southeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .

The 41 km long river has its source 1.6 km northeast of the small town of Monga in the north of Monga National Park , flows southeast through a series of densely forested canyons and flows into the Clyde River about 5 km east of the town of Batemans Bay .

history

The first inhabitants of this country were from the Aboriginal tribe of the Walbanja . European settlers arrived in the 1830s when a riding trail was established along the river. In the 1850s, this wild path was replaced by a road built by inmates that stood on dry stone foundations. By the end of the 19th century, however, this street was closed again; In 2005 a forgotten 770 m long section that was left was discovered.

Flora and fauna

The canyons through which the Buckenbowra River flows are dominated by clusters of casuarina trees. Mangroves are endemic to the river banks; they form the only known habitat there for the lichen species Pertusaria melaleucoides .

The most common fish species found in the river are the Australian trout pike and the codfish Macquaria australasica .
