history
The origin of the village can be dated to the 12th century. Because of its central location between Groningen and Leeuwarden, it was often the scene of disputes.
In the 17th century, due to its location, it developed into an important resting place for stagecoaches . With the arrival of the railroad in the 19th century, Buitenpost became an important transport hub. But it gradually lost its importance as a resting place with the opening of the rail link between Groningen and Leeuwarden in 1866.
After 1955, the population of Buitenpost grew rapidly due to the expansion of industry. The population was 2,689 in 1955, 4,049 in 1975 and 5,639 in 2000. But population growth has slowed for some time. Tourism is becoming increasingly important due to the many cycling and hiking trails.
