The boomerang triggerfish ( Sufflamen bursa ), also known as the white-bellied triggerfish , lives in the western Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Hawaii , the Marquesas , north to southern Japan and south to the Great Barrier Reef , New Caledonia , Rapa and Ducie . It lives singly or in pairs on hidden outer reefs below the surf zone at depths of three to 90 meters.
features
The fish grow to a length of 25 centimeters. Characteristic of the boomerang triggerfish are two curved, brownish or yellowish lines behind the eyes and above the pectoral fins (these bands delimit a light, often white stripe and justify the scientific generic name: the sufflamen is a locking chain on the wagon wheel). The upper side of the body is sand-colored to olive green, the underside separated by a thin, white line from the mouth to the anal fin base and is whitish, light gray to light blue.
Fin formula : dorsal III / 27–30, anal 25–27
nutrition
Boomerang triggerfish feed on algae, detritus , fish spawn, and bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as clams , snails , various crustaceans , sea squirts , echinoderms, and worms.
