The Federal Trade Academy for Leadership and Security at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt , also known as the Security School for short , is an Austrian school of the Theresian Military Academy that started operations at the beginning of the 2019/2020 school year. It is designed as the successor to the military secondary school after its closure at the end of the 2017/2018 school year and, like this one, is located in the Daun barracks in Wiener Neustadt . The basis is the concept of a five-year business academy .

In June 2019, the Ministry of Defense stopped the project for financial reasons, but it was decided to continue after a protest from the parents of the students concerned.

prehistory

In the course of the austerity plans presented by Defense Minister Gerald Klug in October 2014, it was decided to close the military secondary school, against which there was massive resistance from the school community. Although the last Matura was supposed to be held in 2018, rumors began to emerge in spring 2017 that the school would continue to exist. The government program that was presented by the Federal Government Short I before Christmas 2017 and was to be continued there provided further breeding ground .

In January 2018, the newly sworn federal government Kurz I decided to continue the military high school in a different form and to expand it into a training facility for the police sector. The concrete future school type has not yet been determined. The only thing that was certain was that the future military high school would no longer exist in the same building. In September 2018 it was announced that a vocational high school for leadership and safety with two classes would be launched. In November 2018, the finished school concept was presented by representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education at a press conference in the Daun barracks. The school should not be housed in the previous premises of the military high school, but rather new premises should have been built on the premises of the military academy for a budget of approx. 30 million euros.

While the Ministry of Education should have paid for the teachers, the Defense Department should pay the material costs. The Ministry of Finance described this division in April 2019 as unusual and the cost of 30 million euros as “extraordinary”: “The planned security school would be a very large school for few students.” In addition, the principle of expansion instead of new construction with the establishment of a completely new commercial academy will not be preserved. According to the Ministry of Finance, “there is no corresponding need for this type of school”, and figures show that a decline in pupils can be observed at such training centers.

After the end of the Kurz government, the Ministry of Defense under Minister Thomas Starlinger, in consultation with the Ministry of Education, closed the security school on June 7, 2019, as the 30 million euros required for implementation were missing. The 53 students affected were offered alternative school places. The planned closure was in some cases vehemently criticized by the ÖVP , FPÖ and SPÖ , the three parties also voted for a motion for a resolution to continue the Wiener Neustadt security school project. The parents of the affected students also protested against the closure. Due to the various protests, the implementation of the project was finally approved.

concept

The concept of a five-year commercial college with Matura to the graduates of the security school the basis for further education in the army , in the police , prison officers or international organizations that are active in the security area like EU , NATO and OSCE offer.
