The Colorful Forget-me-not ( Myosotis discolor ), and Yellow Vergissmeinnicht mentioned, is a plant in the family of Borage Family (Boraginaceae).
description
Appearance and leaf
The colorful forget-me-not grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. It is usually provided with several stems that protrude at the base and are hairy on top. The leaves are narrow, elliptical-spatulate with a pointed upper end. The hairs of the leaves have a straight tip. The lower leaves are narrowed like a stalk and arranged in a rosette.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from April to June. The flowers sit in elongated coils . The hermaphroditic flowers are 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters in diameter and have a radial symmetry with a double flower envelope . The colorful forget-me-not is relatively easy to distinguish from other Myosotis species, as the flowers on a plant specimen are usually differently colored: initially they have a yellow border and a tube about 2 mm long, then they become reddish and finally blue-violet with a tube of double length. The flowering period is April to June.
The fruit stalks are almost horizontal or upright, at most half as long as the calyx and have no bracts .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72, less often 24.
Occurrence and endangerment
Myosotis discolor is distributed in Europe from Iceland to Spain, to Romania and the Ukraine, in North Africa, on the Canary Islands, Northern Italy and east to Croatia. In addition, the species occurs in North Africa, Turkey and Cyprus. It is a sub-Atlantic floral element . It is rare and endangered in Austria, and very rare in Switzerland. The colorful forget-me-not occurs scattered in northern and central Germany; to the east and south it decreases sharply and is rarely found. The colorful forget-me-not was rated in 1996 in the Red List of endangered plant species in Germany with category 3 = endangered.
The colorful forget-me-not grows in sandy lawns, in the edge of gorse bushes or pine stands, on paths and on the edges of fields. It prefers open, moderately dry, base-poor, moderately acidic, loose sand and stone gravel soils in low-lying areas with mild winter conditions. It is a Kalkflüchter. It is a character type of the association of the Kleinschmielenrasen (Thero-Airion), but also occurs in societies of the lambsweed (Arnoseridenion).
