The Šelmberk Castle ( German : Schellenberg ) is the ruin of a rock castle at 488  m above sea level. NN in the municipality of Běleč u Mladé Vožice in Okres Tábor in Jihočeský kraj in the Czech Republic . It is located on a rocky promontory above the Blanice valley , around two kilometers northeast of Mladá Vožice .

history

The founding by the noble family of Busitz , who later referred to themselves as Lords of Šelmberk, who lived on the fortress Buzice , dates back to the beginning of the 14th century (1318). In the 16th century, it was expanded in the Renaissance style . In 1586 the castle passed to Michal Španovský von Lišov . The castle fell into disrepair in the 17th century.

Ruins of the Palas

The 26 m high crenellated defense tower on the western edge of the ledge, which was expanded as a lookout tower in 1783 , is well preserved. Ruins have been preserved from the palace . There is a newer building to the east of the facility.
The facility is used by the Centrum Šelmberk project .
