The Bieberstein Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 210  m above sea level. NHN high cliff above the Wiehl valley near Bieberstein in the Oberbergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The castle was built in the 14th century and was first mentioned in 1342. It was once a mighty quarry stone building of considerable wall thickness and received its present-day appearance in the late Middle Ages. The castle was inhabited until the 19th century, but was then abandoned so that it fell into disrepair.

During research in 1933, a terraced basement was uncovered. The legend of an underground corridor that connected Bieberstein with the village of Grünenbach and through which the castle occupants are said to have supplied themselves with fresh food during the siege was not confirmed by the researchers. There is also the legend that there is a golden plow in the seventh cellar of the castle. This could neither be confirmed nor refuted. Only the remains of the walls and surrounding walls are preserved from the ruins. However, the entrance to the basement is no longer preserved.

The owner

The owners of Bieberstein Castle were already dependent on the Homburg rulership as Homburg officials in the 16th century . For this reason, the castle is an interesting testimony to the territorial history of the Bergisches Land, even if it no longer has a high monument value in its current ruinous form in terms of castle history, it still has this historical value for regional studies in the area of the Homburg rulership.

In the Marienhagener church there are three grave slabs from the 16./17. Century, which refer to the former lords of Bieberstein Castle, namely Gerlach von Karthusen, Albert von Lixfelt and Just Lixfelt.
