Falkenstein Castle

The Falkenstein Castle is the ruin of a high medieval Spur castle in Waldhof-Falkenstein at the Our in Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The castle is at a steep 350  m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur above the Ourtal in the German-Luxembourgish nature park (nature reserve "Ourschleife-Falkenstein") and can be reached via a narrow rock path.

history

The castle was probably built in the first half of the 12th century by the noblemen of Falkenstein and later expanded by the counts of Manderscheid . The main castle and the castle chapel date from the 12th to 14th centuries. In 1679 the castle was destroyed and later rebuilt.

Falkenstein Castle, which belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg until the end of the 18th century , was owned by the French-Luxembourgish de la Gardelle family until the death of its last resident Anna-Maria de la Gardelle von Falkenstein, daughter of Adam Heinrich de la Gardelle von Falkenstein from Falkenstein. The castle went to Prussia in 1815 , in 1886 the castle was sold to a private individual and the house expanded. Today the ruin with the house and chapel is still privately owned and inhabited.

From the former castle are still the castle gate, parts of the curtain wall , a wall of the palace , parts of the kennel , a defense tower , vaulted corridors, the chapel and wall remains of the stables and servants' house .
