The Gatersleben castle is a partially preserved moated castle in the Selkeaue , on the northern edge of Gatersleben , a district of the city of Seeland in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The castle was probably built by the Lords of Gatersleben in the 9th century and was mentioned in 964 as a circular castle surrounded by moats . In 1179 the castle was mentioned as "castrum Gatersleve" and in 1262 "castrum Gaterslebe". From 1179 to 1183 a square fort was added on behalf of the Bishop of Halberstadt . The bishops used the castle to hold their summer synods . In the 13th century, the castle was given an additional storey as a knight's hall , in 1460 an increase with loopholes and in 1693 the current roof structure.

investment

The castle complex had a very large outer bailey , of which defensive walls still testify today, and was later converted into an agricultural enterprise. The main castle was also substantially rebuilt, whereby the Romanesque residential tower ( keep ) with its high entrance at a height of seven meters retained its shape. The moat is also preserved. Today the castle is used as a community administration and for living.
