Husen Castle

The castle Husen is the ruin of a high medieval hilltop castle in the valley of the Kinzig in the Black Forest above the city Hausach in Ortenaukreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

history

Presumably the dukes of Zähringen built their first hilltop castle there in the 12th century, which was first mentioned in 1246 as Castrum Husen . It was owned by the Counts of Freiburg . In 1303 the castle came to the Counts of Fürstenberg through the marriage of Verena von Freiburg .

Count Heinrich VI. von Fürstenberg had the castle extensively rebuilt and expanded from 1453 to 1477. A ditch and a fore- bailey protected the actual castle with its palas and keep .

The castle was the residence of the princely bailiffs. In 1632 it burned down and was rebuilt. In 1643 they destroyed Franco-Weimar troops under Count Jean Baptiste Budes de Guébriant .

The ruins were later included in the entrenchments to defend the valley against enemy troops (see also Baroque defenses in the Black Forest ). In 1896 the keep was given a crenellated crown instead of the spire . In 1968 the city of Hausach bought the ruins of the Fürstenberg dynasty.

Parts of the palace wall, the so-called battery tower and the 14-meter high keep, which can be climbed as a viewing tower on the first Sunday of the month in the summer months , have been preserved.
