The castle Lowenberg is the ruin of a lowland castle of the Middle Ages in the north of the country Brandenburg . It is located in the Löwenberg district of the Löwenberger Land community . The castle was probably built as a center of the Löwenberg region until the middle of the 13th century . In the 18th century the ruins were built over with the Löwenberg Castle .

description

The castle complex lay on a plateau that was raised on an area of 35 by 47 m. The plateau was surrounded by a moat that formed part of the multi-part city fortifications of Löwenberg. The moat is relatively well preserved, but is now dry. Presumably by the middle of the 13th century, a castle tower was built on the plateau as a permanent house with an area of 11 by 11 m, the basement of which has been preserved with a barrel vault . The wall thickness of 3 m suggests a great height of the tower. In the 14th and 15th centuries, a palas made of exposed brickwork was added to the southeast side of the tower . Of this, the basement with cross and barrel vaults has been preserved including the remains of a fireplace .

At the beginning of the 18th century the castle was in ruins. The Löwenberg Castle was built on the basement floors of the tower and hall, a two-story, plastered mansion in the Baroque style with a hipped roof . The remains of the castle were incorporated into the masonry of the new ground floor. At the beginning of the 20th century the castle fell into disrepair. In 1926 it was rebuilt and then used as a youth hostel . It has served as a kindergarten since the 1950s .

history

The Löwenberg, which was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century, was first mentioned in a document in 1267 as "Lowenburg". The Lowenburg is exchanged from Margrave Johann I of Brandenburg to Bishop Heinrich I of Brandenburg. In the land book of Charles IV from 1375, oppidum et castrum , a fortified city with a castle, are mentioned. A year earlier, the Hus tu Lowenberg was transferred from the Brandenburg Bishop Dietrich to Albert von Redern . In 1460 Löwenberg and the associated little country were bought as a fiefdom to Hans von Bredow. It remained fully or partially owned by the von Bredow family until 1788 and then passed, with considerable inheritance disputes, to the von Arnstedt family , together with Hoppenrade Castle , through the scandalous Charlotte described by Theodor Fontane as the herb's daughter in his book Five Castles von Kraut , married von Arnstedt.
