The Obbendorf Castle is a former manor in Hambach , a district of the Niederzier municipality in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The complex is now home to a hotel-restaurant.
description
Obbendorf Castle is a four-wing complex, the buildings of which form a rectangle and enclose an inner courtyard. The house with its distinctive gables from the Renaissance period is on the eastern corner . Wall anchors tell of its year of construction: 1604. A three-storey gate tower adjoins it to the north . The former farm buildings of the castle occupy today's south and north wings and date from the 19th century. The oldest parts of the Niederungsburg made of brick are its gate tower and the foundations , which date from the end of the 13th / beginning of the 14th century. The former trenches that surrounded the complex are only partially preserved.
history
Obbendorf was first mentioned in a document in 893 in the Prümer Urbar . The first known owner was a knight named Reinhard von Oppendorp, who was first mentioned in 1301. From 1350 to 1481 the Schellarts, relatives of Reinhard von Oppendorp, were owners. 1404 ducal Hofmeister Johann Schellart de Oppendorf was additionally Castle Gürzenich invested . At that time the knight's seat was called "Obendorph". Hermann von Hammerstein is recorded as the owner in 1481. This family remained the owner until the beginning of the 17th century.
In 1604 the residential buildings were completely rebuilt by the von Hammerstein family. She also changed the gate tower and converted it into residential use. Its top floor was removed. Only a short time after this construction work, Theodor Althoven, Vice Chancellor of the Duchy of Jülich-Berg , acquired the complex for 6300 Reichstaler . His grandchildren sold the indebted property in 1764 to the main creditor, a Freiherr von Hallberg.
After 1850 the castle was converted into a farm. The grandfather of the current owner, Hubert Müller, bought the property in 1907 and converted the complex with the northern barn into a closed courtyard.
After a major renovation in 1995, the castle was converted into a hotel-restaurant.
