Pritzerbe Castle

In the castle Pritzerbe in the district Pritzerbe the city Havelsee in Potsdam-Mittelmark, it was a former Episcopal lowland castle . Pritzerbe Castle was the residence of the Prince-Bishop of the Brandenburg Monastery and Bishop of the Brandenburg Diocese . Remains still visible exist in the form of a castle barn . The castle was in the corner between the Havel and the Pritzerber See and was built to control the river and the road between the cities of Brandenburg and Havelberg . Due to the strategically favorable location, the important ferry connection across the lake could be monitored along the road.

history

Presumably there was a Slavic castle wall in the area of the northern corner between the Havel and Pritzerber See . On the basis of archaeological finds such as broken glass, there is evidence that the area was settled by Slavs . In the run-up to the castle, remains of the settlement and a stirrup with rich inlaidation of silver, copper and brass , which dates back to the 11th century and was accepted as an import from the area of the Vistula estuary , were found.

King Otto I had transferred the towns of Pritzerbe and Ziesar, together with the surrounding lands , to the diocese of Brandenburg, which he had newly founded in 948 . In the course of the uprising of the Slavs in 983 , however, the Germans were soon expelled again and only after the reconquest by Albrecht the Bear in 1157 could the land be permanently occupied. In 1161 the transmissions from the 10th century were confirmed. Thereupon the Bishop of Brandenburg had the Pritzerbe Castle, initially probably a tower hill , built or the existing castle expanded instead of the presumably previous Slavic fortifications .

The Pritzerbe Castle and the surrounding prince-bishop's lands of the Brandenburg Monastery were administered by a Vogt and episcopal knights like Daniel von Mukede lived on site. In 1230 a court belonging to the castle, a curia , was mentioned in writing. Between the years 1216 and 1275, the bishops of Brandenburg repeatedly used the Pritzerbe as a residence . Then Ziesar was given preference and the castle there was expanded into a permanent seat. In the late Middle Ages, Pritzerbe Castle was finally abandoned and fell into disrepair. As early as 1550, the site of the former castle was mentioned as a "desert castle".

The later Mühlenberg or Bischofshügel on the southern border of the town is still visible part of Pritzerbe Castle. The remains of the castle are protected as a ground monument.
