Vielsen Castle

The castle Vielsen even Vielser castle , Vilser castle or fortress Vilsen called, is an Outbound Turmhügelburg (Motte) in the meadows of the "Vielser court" on Vielser creek about 700 meters southeast of Salzkotten in the circle Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The castle was built by Paderborn Bishop Simon von Lippe shortly before 1247 to protect the Vilsen settlement from the Archbishop of Cologne. In the peace treaty of 1247, the Archbishop of Cologne approved the construction of the castle. After another conflict between the two bishops in 1256 at the Battle of Brechten was decided, which was in a renewed peace treaty razing the castle decided. This destruction was probably also carried out, as there are no more mentions later.

Today no traces can be seen on the surface, but their exact location has been reconstructed on the basis of several excavations. The hill visible at the place probably belongs to the former parish church. During explorations in 1980 remains of the foundations were found in the northern area of the hill, which could belong to the former castle.

According to an expert opinion from 2007, rescue excavations are likely to be necessary due to the advancing development and development of industrial areas in the area of the church village of Vilsen and Vielsen Castle.
