Weikertschlag Castle

The castle Weikertschlag is the ruins of a hilltop castle in Weikertschlag an der Thaya in Lower Austria .

history

The time of the construction of Weikertschlag Castle on the so-called Pankratiushügel is not known. However, the castle is mentioned indirectly through its owners Albero and Wichart in a deed in 1178 relating to the tithe that belonged to the Geras and Pernegg foundations .

After 1232 the place and the castle came into the ownership of the Babenbergs . After it died out, King Ottokar II Přemysl claimed the castle back from Rudolf von Habsburg as his property, but this demand was unsuccessful.

Former watchtower of Weikertschlag Castle

In 1404, Hynek ( Suchý Čert ) von Kunstadt ( Heinrich der Dűrenteufel von Kunstadt auf Jaispitz † 1407) and Ulrich von Neuhaus and Albert von Vöttau occupied the castle. In response, the dukes Wilhelm and Albrecht besieged the castle and destroyed it. The time of these events does not seem to be clear, because the year 1399 is also mentioned as the time for the successful siege.

Since the castle was not rebuilt, it was demolished over time as building material for other buildings, so that only very little of the actual castle remains today. Still preserved and visible is the residue of bergfried-like tower in the outer bailey .

Pankratius Chapel

The so-called Pankratius Chapel was located between the castle and this tower. In the course of the Josephine reforms , it was closed and demolished in 1784. Its bell, which was cast in Krems an der Donau in 1723, is said to have been found years later in the Moravian Thaya . For some time it was kept in the rectory of Weikertschlag and then used in neighboring Oberndorf. It had to be delivered in the First World War.
