Bítov (German Vöttau ) is a municipality in the Okres Znojmo in the Czech Republic .
The place in South Moravia has a two-part history . In the initial planning for the construction of the Frain an der Thaya dam , Ing. Ferdinand Schmidt planned three smaller barrages, which would have spared Vöttau. Later, however, he came to the conclusion that only a single, large dam wall could ideally solve the problem, even if the place Vöttau had to be sacrificed. Therefore, a new Vöttau was built on the plateau above the Thayatals.
The name "Vöttau" is likely to be derived from the Latin Vetus Via and later Vetovia . The names Alt Vöttau (Stary Bítov) and Neu Vöttau (Novy Bítov) are not official - there is still only Bítov (Vöttau) on the maps - but are occasionally even used on Czech websites.
Alt Vöttau
The Bítov Castle is first mentioned around 1060. The village of Vöttau, located in the valley of the Schelletau ( Želetavka ), a tributary of the Thaya, was probably founded around this time .
In 1780, Klemens Maria Hofbauer, born on December 26, 1751, applied for the position of hermit near Vöttau. However, his request is rejected.
Richard Georg Plaschka was born on July 8, 1925 in Vöttau . The historian was director of the Austrian Institute for East and Southeast Europe from 1958 to 1988 and Professor of Eastern European History at the University of Vienna from 1967 to 1988 .
New Vöttau
At the same time as the construction of the dam in Frain an der Thaya , Neu-Vöttau (Novy Bítov) is also being built. Of the houses and the church of Alt-Vöttau only the stone walls remain.
For understandable reasons, the planners at Neu-Vöttau do not make the job of designing each of the newly built houses individually. And so you can recognize the houses from this period by their uniform appearance.
Around 1933, when the reservoir began to flood completely, the last Alt-Vöttau residents had to move to Neu-Vöttau.
For a long time, the tower of the Trinity Chapel protruding from the water is a reminder of the sunken village. Today Bítov has 143 inhabitants (January 1, 2019).
On the Thaya there is one of many campsites in the region and in Bítov itself there has been a museum for car veterans for several years. The ruins of Zornstein Castle are nearby .
