Bítov Castle

The Bítov Castle (German Vöttau Castle ) belongs to the municipality of Bítov in the Znojmo district in the Czech Republic. It is located about 25 km northwest of Znojmo above the Želetavka , not far from its confluence with the Thaya .

history

Bítov Castle is one of the oldest castles in Moravia . It was first mentioned in 1061 as a sovereign property and was part of the defense system against Austria.

In 1298 the Moravian governor Raimund von Lichtenburg received the castle and the lordship of Bítov as a pledge . In 1307 Heinrich von Kärnten donated the possessions to the Lichtenburgers as inheritance . They built the castle chapel of the Assumption in 1334. At the end of the 15th century, the castle was expanded during a renovation.

After extinction of the family branch Vöttauer the light Burger ( Bítovský for Lichtenburka ) Castles and Power 1576 came to Strein ( Streun ) Schwarzenau. They rebuilt the castle around 1600 and sold it to the Lords of Wlašim in 1617. From these they inherited the Counts of Daun in 1736 , who also had the Palais Daun built in Znojmo as the seat of the city. They restored the castle in the mid-19th century in a neo-Gothic style. The castle chapel was regotified according to plans by Anton Rücker.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Bítov estate belonged to the Lords of Haugwitz . After further changes of ownership, it was acquired by the industrialist Georg Haas von Hasenfels in 1912 , whose family was expropriated in 1945.

The castle houses a collection of paintings by German and Austrian romantics, including by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, and a collection of stuffed animals by Baron Georg Haas von Hasenfels (1876–1945). From the end of the 17th century (1691?) To around 1890, the famous Bibliotheca Zriniana was housed in an adjoining room of the castle for almost two centuries, then sold as heir to the Viennese antiquarian Samuel Kende and finally brought back to Croatia , where it is now in the National - and University Library of Zagreb is located.

A collection of castle and forest ghosts from the 17th century can be viewed in the walls of the castle brewery. Only the western cemetery tower remained from the 13th century.
