Löwenstein Castle (also Lindenschmitt ; French Château de Lœwenstein ) is the ruin of a medieval rock castle near Wingen in Alsace . It is located at a height of around 530 meters in the immediate vicinity of the Hohenburg , Wegelnburg and Fleckenstein . The castle is classified as a historic monument (Monument historique) under number PA00085241 .

history

The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century as an imperial fief of Wolfram von Löwenstein. In 1283 it was awarded to Johann Ochsenstein by the Roman-German King Rudolf von Habsburg .

In 1380 the castle was shared with Hensel Streif von Landenberg and in 1383 half of it was pledged to Johannes (Hanemann) I von Bitsch .

Just three years later, in 1386, the castle was destroyed by imperial vicar Johann von Lichtenberg due to robbery . It probably wasn't rebuilt.

The ruins were later owned by the Puller von Hohenburg (1482), the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch (1485), the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg (1570) and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt (1736).

What was left was destroyed by French troops under General Monclar in 1676/1677 .

investment

The castle rises on two closely adjacent rocks, east of the main castle , west of the bailey . Remnants of the stair tower , some rock stairs, a few walls and some rooms and passageways carved out of the rock have been preserved.
